Whale Watching in Japan
Rating (7/10)
Japan's history with whales has not been the prettiest. However, many of those once hunters are now making a living from organising whale watching trips in their old hunting grounds. Common species of whales in Japan are humpback whales (February – April) and sperm whales (summer – autumn). Spinner and bottlenose dolphin and both common throughout the year, while spotted dolphin and short-finned whale have also had confirmed sightings. Many trips run from Shikoku island (the smallest of the four main islands). However, the best location for whale watching is off the Ogasawara (or Bonin) Islands about 1000km directly south of Tokyo. The only way to reach the island is by cruise liner. The trip takes approximately 24 hours but there are many small, locally run inns and hotels and the islands also offer other opportunities for adventure and exploration with diving and swimming with dolphins tours also organised locally.
