Geography of Japan

Japan is a country of over 3000 islands, including four main islands with the remainder extending along the Pacific coast of Asia. Japan lies on the intersection of four continental plates, a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. The islands themselves are the result of volcanic activity, the evidence of which can still be seen today in steaming hot springs and smouldering volcanoes. Much of Japan consists of dense forests and rough mountainous areas that rise from flat plains.
