Geographical Location of Japan

Japan is located in the Pacific Ocean to the east of China and the Korean peninsula. The four main islands of Japan are separated from the Asian continent by the Sea of Japan. However, the many islands which make up the country stretch over 3000km from the Russian island of Sakhain in the north through the East China Sea to Taiwan

Languages of Japan

Japanese is spoken throughout Japan. The most prominent feature of the language is the writing. The Japanese language consists of three different sets of characters: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. The latter of them is the largest with several thousand different characters, most of Chinese origin. In many situations Arabic numerals are used to represent numerals. To help visitors to the country, in tourist areas, airports, and on trains for example, both Japanese and Latin type script is used.

Currency of Japan

The currency in Japan is the Yen. Coins can be found in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen whilst bank notes come in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 yen. Exchanging money in Japan can be a little more time consuming than in most European destinations. However, most major city banks and large hotels provide services to exchange cash and travellers cheques. It is also worth noting that not all ATM machines in Japan accept western cards, you should contact your bank or credit card company for locations of suitable machines.
