Fishing in Kenya

The Kenya Fisheries Department in Nairobi operates a number of fishing camps in the country but you will need your own vehicle and a fishing licence to use these. The deep-sea fishing on the coast is some of the best in the world and fishing trips can be arranged from the resorts of Shimoni, Diani Beach, Mtwapa, Watamu and Malindi during the season from August to April. For freshwater fishing, there are Nile perch in Lakes Victoria and Turkana and some exceptional trout fishing around the Aberdares and Mt Kenya. Fishing licences for the Mt Kenya, Mt Elgon and Aberdare National Parks can be obtained at the park gates for about KSh100 per day. A more costly option is to take a charter flight from Nanyuki to Lake Rutundu in the Mt Kenya National Park, which is well stocked with rainbow trout, where accommodation is available in comfortable well-equipped log cabins.
