Hiking / Walking in Kenya

From January to December

There are a number of good hiking and walking routes, particularly in the more remote regions. The Ngong Hills, outside Nairobi, is the most accessible area offering some good walks, but if you are prepared to travel inland there are some excellent walks in the Kerio Valley in the Western Highlands with stunning scenery and prolific birdlife. For the more adventurous, the extinct volcano of Mt Elgon on the Ugandan border has some of the best treks where the birdlife, fauna and flora are superb and there is also the chance of seeing elephants that lick the salt in the lava tubes or caves, four of which are open to the public. For serious mountain trekking, Mt Kenya is the best choice. Savage Wilderness Safaris based in Nairobi do a number of walking trips as well as climbing and mountaineering on Mt Kenya.
