If you’re staying in Laos, you will find that many of the more expensive hotels will call themselves Resorts. Though don’t be expecting any Barney the Dinosaur shows or karaoke tribute acts, these hotels are basically just offering really nice (and rather expensive) accommodation, usually with beautiful views, food and conference facilities. Hotels in Laos are only starting to tap into the digital revolution (the internet is controlled by the government in Laos) and as such, you won’t find many hotels that have branched out online yet. The majority of places outside Luang Prabang won’t even take reservations, unless you are planning a visit in or around Primai Lao (Lao New Year), in which case you may notice the price has mysteriously rocketed. Unless you are staying in or around Vientiane, Luang or Vang Vieng, you will basically have to stay in what you can find. Rest assured, these main areas offer a wealth of options for tourists on every budget. Though if you want luxury, go for the resorts.
