History of Las Vegas, USA

The history of Las Vegas is as colourful and exciting as its reputation for being Sin City. In its short existence from 1911 until now, Las Vegas has enough drama and suspense to guarantee it as the setting for many Hollywood movies and even popular television shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its namesake Las Vegas. Originally a watering hole and travel stop for pioneers and the military, Las Vegas slowly built itself into the city it is today with several distinct events in its history. Many residents settled in Las Vegas with the completion of the Hoover Dam in 1935 and an increased military presence in the 1950’s.

When the notorious mobster “Bugsy” Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel in 1946, the Las Vegas Strip was born along with the city’s infamous link with organized crime. In the 1960’s the city began an era of corporate legitimacy with Howard Hughes buying up most of the casino hotels and a large amount of land in Las Vegas. Opening the Mirage in 1989, the mega-resorts of The Strip were in full swing, leading us to the Las Vegas we know and love today.
