Food and Drink in London, United Kingdom
Rating (10/10)
London's ethnic and cultural diversity is matched by the range of restaurants in this the most cosmopolitan of cities. Quite literally, all of the world's cuisines can be found in London in some form or another and the range of cooking styles is equally matched by the range in prices. In short, dining out in London can be expensive, but there are plenty of eating places that will suit those on more limited budgets too. Dining on modern European style food in the 1 Michelin starred restaurant 1 Lombard Street will cost you on average £40 for a meal.
Here, you are as likely to find bangers and mash (a traditional London dish) on the menu as haute cuisine, of which there are many examples. Of course, you can also eat at restaurants, Michelin starred or otherwise, that cost a lot more, but quality food at reasonable prices is not hard to find in London, simply because there is so much choice on offer. On average, you could expect to pay about £14 to £15 to dine out in London, but you will find excellent food even cheaper if you are prepared to look for it. You will also find restaurants a little cheaper if you are prepared to travel a little further away from the centre. Not only this, but you are likely to find the more authentic versions of the various world cuisines in these areas. For example, a little to the east of the City of London and Spitalfields lies Brick Lane. This is the centre of London's Bangladeshi community and you will find dozens of restaurants there selling Bangladeshi food. Of course, you will need to be selective, but there are some excellent restaurants in this ethnic community, as there are in many of London's other ethnic communities.
Even if you decide to remain in the centre of London however, you will not be short of options for eating. You may also wish to consider eating in a pub. Pub food can be basic, but many pubs in London today offer menus that compete with restaurants in terms of the range and quality of their fare. They are usually a little cheaper too. Of course, if you enjoy fast food, there unlimited choices available to you, including McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and all of the other international brands.
