You may not think of London as a great place for walking and hiking, but you would be wrong! Walking in London can be so much more than surviving the hustle and bustle of the pavement, or dodging traffic. In fact, even in central London, there are some excellent opportunities for walking in green space and away from the traffic.Why not try hiking some of the Capital Ring? This is a walking route that covers some 78 miles (125 kilometres) in central London and joins various parks and open spaces together along its way. Of course, you don't need to tackle it all in one go and the Capital Ring is divided up into 15 sections ranging from 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) to 7.5 miles (12 kilometres) each. On the Capital Ring, you can take in such sights as Richmond Deer Park, The Thames Barrier and Crystal Palace Park.

There are other routes too, such as the Green Chain, which stretches through the many woodlands of South East London, and is divided into 10 sections. Other routes you may care to try are: the Jubilee Walkway, the Lee Valley Walk, the London Loop and the Thames Path.
