Crime in London, United Kingdom

Like any large city, London has its share of crime, and sometimes violent crime. However, if you apply common sense and maintain a healthy level of vigilance, you are likely to have a safe and happy visit to London. If you travel on the underground always choose a carriage in which there are other people, especially at night-time. You should also be on your guard for pickpockets on crowded streets and in other crowded areas, so keep your wallet, purse, or valuables out of easy reach. Watch out too for people who will distract you, while somebody else lifts your wallet or purse. If you are out late at night be extra vigilant in areas such as Kings Cross, or Peckham and steer clear of any disturbances as there has been an increase in knife crime in recent years.

Also, always use official black cabs (hackney carriages), or licensed private hire cars. Never accept a lift from a car claiming to be a taxi, or from a taxi tout. If you keep your wits about you, without becoming paranoid, you will enjoy your stay in London without any problems.
