The Fantasia
Ends: Saturday 31 October
Fantasia is an annual celebration of traditional Moroccan equestrian prowess and skill. It consists of a group of horse riders, who wear traditional clothes, charging along a straight path in a line. After about two hundred yards, all of the riders fire their muskets into the air. The performance is dangerous and involves a lot of skilful riding. In addition, the riders need to synchronise their firing of the muskets, so that the audience hears only a single shot. Two Arabic words summarise what the Fantasia is all about. They are harrga (movement) and barood (gun-powder). The horses used in the Fantasia are a breed known as the Barb and its origins lie in the ancient wars between Berbers and desert knights. Today, the Fantasia is considered an integral part of Moroccan culture and even as a form of martial art.
The coastal town of El Jadida has become the second location for the Fantasia from 22nd to 26th October.
