The Marriage Festival

In the very heart of Morocco the Berber tribes preserve their culture, with its ancient way of life that remains virtually untouched by the outside world. Amongst the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, the tribes people gather at the end of summer and in the early days of September, after having spent the spring and the heat of summer in the mountain peaks with their flocks. This is the time of year for them to change from their the nomadic life and settle down for the winter months. It is when they prepare their plots and mountain terraces for autumn sowing. It is also the time, as it has been over the centuries, for the social gatherings to happen. The Berbers gather together to start their annual celebrations. It is also the time when Berber tribesmen start to look for future wives. For the visitor, the Moussem of Imilchil is a wonderful place to visit at this time of year, because the town turns into a large fair and market. You will see Berber crafts at their best and most varied here.
