Hotels in Kenya
There is a large variety of hotels in Kenya catering to all sizes and standards. As well as the big Western companies, there are a number of small Kenyan hotel chains as well as private family-run establishments. In the cities, most of the hotels are geared towards the business traveller offering conference facilities and health clubs, with prices ranging from US$50 – 150 per night. The country hotels are more suited to the tourists and are set in rural locations outside the cities, and include country and golf clubs, costing between US$50 – 200 per night. Kenya hotels at the coast are more exclusive retreats set in beautiful gardens with pools and sea views and can cost anything from US$100 - 600 per night. For something completely different, there are the tree hotels in Kenya, with two located in the Aberdare National Park, namely the Ark and the famous Treetops, as well as in the Mt Kenya National Park and Shimba Hills Game Reserve.

Hostels in Kenya
Again, there are quite a variety of hostels and guest houses in Kenya but the standards are extremely variable and are sometimes located in rough areas, not recommended for the lone female traveller. Accommodation in the Kenya hostels and guest houses is fairly basic but usually includes a bathroom and breakfast, with prices starting at about US$10 a night. The only hostel with Hostelling International (HI) is in Nairobi but there are plenty of other youth hostels including a few YMCA and YWCA.

Resorts in Kenya
Much of the Indian Ocean coastline from Diani Beach in the south up to Malindi, north of Mombasa, is taken up by large luxury beach resorts, all offering a similar holiday experience with swimming pools, water sports, bars, restaurants, souvenir vendors and tribal dance shows in the evening. These resorts are mostly run by the big European package tour companies and good deals can be obtained outside the school holiday times.

Self Catering Accommodation in Kenya
There are a small number of exclusive hotels with self-contained apartments ranging from US$50 – 200, but the main source of self catering accommodation is with the cottages, or bandas, which can be found mainly in or near the national parks and by the coast. These are basic wooden huts, thatched stone huts or brick bungalows with solar-powered lights, bathroom and kitchen facilities and offer excellent value for budget travellers. Costs are around US$50 per person and you need to bring your own food, drinking water, bedding and firewood. For a very different self catering experience, you can stay in private homesteads to sample the colonial architecture of the early settlers’ homes. These can vary in price from US$50 – 600 per night.

Lodges in Kenya
The lodges in Kenya are located within the national parks and reserves, to give visitors the best possible opportunities to view the wildlife in fantastic surroundings. Prices vary from US$50 – 500 per night. For a more luxurious African experience though, the tented camps in Kenya offer large, comfortable hotel rooms under canvas. These are usually in natural locations by rivers or other wonderfully remote settings, again within the national parks. The prices reflect the luxury and range from US$150 – 700 per night. Some locations are so isolated that guests fly in and out on charter planes.
