Cancun: Holidays

The Caribbean Jewel of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula

Backpacking in Cancun

There are a variety of hostels in Cancun. Some are situated near the beach; while some are closer to downtown Cancun. A room will cost about 130 pesos per person per night. Backpacking in Cancun is easy as far as getting around is concerned. Most hostels will offer laundry and internet services. Be careful when traveling with your back pack in Cancun as pick pocketing is common. Make sure your hostel provides a safe box for keeping your valuables in while you are out. Backpackers often find accommodations suited to their needs around Chetumal.

Beach in Cancun

The Cancun beaches are gorgeous and the water is crystal clear and warm. The sand in Cancun is ground up coral and doesn’t seem to get too hot. Shopping can also be done at the beach as many of the tourists sell different items along the beach. Cancun is renowned for its’ beaches, the sea is generally warm and calm. Many beaches offer activities such as volleyball, parasailing and snorkeling. If it is a more relaxed beach holiday you are looking for you can relax and soak up the sun in a hammock. You will hear many different languages on the beaches of Cancun, and people watching is the unofficial pastime of visitors on Cancun beaches.

The eastern side beaches are located in the hotel zone and you will find beaches on sides, the lagoon side and the sea side. Every hotel along this zone has a beach front view. Although these beaches are all open to the public and are excellent spots for beach sports and activities, these beaches are open to the Caribbean Sea which means the waters can be unpredictable. Cancun hotel beaches and the marinas use colored warning flags so you will always know what the condition of the sea is like. Before you venture off into the water; pay attention to these warning flags and all local signs regarding the tides and the undertow currents.

We recommend the northern beaches in Cancun (are Playa Las Perlas, Playa Linda, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol ) are located north of the hotel zone and face the Isla Mujeres (or the Island of Women). The Isla Mujeres is a small, beautiful island located just 8 miles across the Behia de Mujeres (or the Bay of Women) from Cancun. The island protects the beaches on this coast beach making them a wonderful place for the children to play or to practice water sports like jet skiing. The northern beaches include Playa Las Perlas, Playa Linda, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol. All of these beaches are very clean and are open to the public. In particular, we suggest the beaches facing the Bahía de Mujeres (on the northern part of the Zona Hotelera) for swimming. If you want to visit the Isla Mujeras itself, from the Cancun International Airport you can take a van to Puerto Juarez or even Gran Puerto Cancun which is north of downtown Cancun about 15 minutes. The cost will be only 35 pesos. Do keep in mind June to October are the hottest and wettest months across most of Mexico.

Camping in Cancun

Because no beaches in Cancun are privately owned, you can pitch a tent just about anywhere in Cancun. Safety is an issue, so try and be somewhere that is not too deserted. There are a few organized campsites available. Some are more for RV travelers, others offer space and a hammock. Beach huts made from palm fronds are also available to rent, but are becoming few and far between as more resorts are being favoured. Camping will never be the biggest part of the tourist market in Cancun; you will always find suitable sites under the stars in Cancun.

Activities during this non-stop party week include a Welcome Party, Caribbean Cruise, Bar Hopping and a Beach Barbecue. Unfortunately this beautiful beach destination does not have a strong gay network or a variety of gay services to make it an important gay spot in Mexico yet, but it's still worth visiting. There are about 5 gay bars and one gay Bed and Breakfast. Los Delfines, on the south area of the hotel area is where the gay beach is located. The Cancun International Gay Festival was started in 1995 by several gay tourism officials who wanted to show visitors that there is a gay presence in this Mexican-Caribbean paradise. There is no parade, but lots of fun activities, including a Rockin' Beach Party, a Sunset Caribbean Cruise, and a Grand City Tour to downtown Cancun and the Mayan ruins, and Special Events at all the bars. The party never stops in Cancun, and the gay club scene is no exception, there’s a lot of fun to be had at the three gay clubs.
