The population of the Azores is just under 240,000, most of whom are descendants of migrants from the Algarve and Minho regions of Portugal, plus small amounts with Dutch and African origins. The most populous island is São Miguel (pop. 130,000) followed by Terceira Island (55,000), Faiala Island and Pico Island, with 15,000 each. Ponta Delgada (46,000) is the largest city and capital of the Azores and is located on São Miguel Island. Other major cities or municipalities are Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira and Horta on Faial.
