Boston: Geography

The Athens of America

Boston Geography

Boston is a far more compact and densely populated city than some of the areas in the United States. Just over 600,000 people call Boston their home, with this large number crammed into 48 square miles of land.

There is a prominent Irish and Italian community in Boston and also a West Indian presence. The main language is English. Parts of the city closely resemble English and European cities, with winding, cobbled roads that do not fit into the square block systems of most American cities.

These historic, traditional areas contrast the modern, looming buildings downtown. Boston is surrounded by the Greater Boston area, with many of the names of the towns and cities giving away the English heritage of early settlers. Chelsea, Cambridge, Milton, Needham and Derham are just some of the areas that surround Boston.
