City of Stone
Bargaining is common in flea markets, but not in shops – although you might find that the shop owner will offer a discount if you are spending a larger amount of money, especially when it comes to handbags, shoes and jewellery. It’s quite acceptable to ask if there is a special price for a room in a hotel if you plan to stay for more than a few days, particularly as the more sumptuous places are pricey and can set you back a couple of hundred pounds a night. Normal banking hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am-midday and at varied times between 2.30 to 4.30pm.
Changing money in a bank can be time-consuming, but the rates are generally much better than in exchange offices. Exchange rates are displayed outside banks and exchange offices and are also printed in daily newspapers. To tip on top of restaurant service charges is not expected, but it is usual to leave a small amount, say 1 euro per person. If there is no service charge attached to your bill, you may consider leaving a 10% tip. In bars and clubs, Italians often leave any small change as a tip for staff, but tipping taxi drivers is not common practice. Tipping the porter at higher-class hotels is, however.
