Florence: Food Guide - Dining Out

City of Stone

In the centre of Florence, where tourist-type places tend to take centre stage, it can be a little harder to find an authentic local trattoria but it's nowhere near impossible. Just walk around a few streets at dinner time (after 8pm), comparing menus, taking in atmospheres and observing clientele and you will happen across some charming little restaurants in Florence. Local specialities include steak (bistecca alla fiorentina) and tripe (trippa). If you eat pizza, ensure it is freshly cooked in a wood oven, not the heated up, frozen types you get in some of the smaller tourist eateries.

You might decide to forget about your budget one evening and treat yourself to a wonderful meal in picturesque surroundings. There are several bars and restaurants situated on picturesque Piazza della Signoria, where you can eat at outdoors tables facing the Palazzo Vecchio. Food and restaurants in Florence reflect the rest of the city – classy and attractively presented.
