Capital of Cuba
Contrary to popular belief, Cuba in fact has one of the lowest crime rates in the Western Hemisphere, and is regarded as the safest place to travel in Latin America. There is a huge police presence on the island, and particularly around Havana. Many of the police are specifically there to protect tourists, and are generally fairly helpful. That said, nowhere is perfect – it is important to remain vigilant and to keep a close eye on your belongings in the busiest tourist spots. Violent crime is rare in Cuba, as is sexual crime, though women traveling on their own should employ the same vigilance that they would at home.
