Hong Kong: Gay and Lesbian
The Pearl of the Orient
Hong Kong is continually taking a more proactive approach to gays and lesbians but the territory is by no means gay and lesbian friendly. There is now a gay rights parade in the city but for men under the age of 21, engaging in sodomy earns them a life imprisonment sentence. Homosexuality is not uncommon but is hidden behind closed doors and generally not tolerated in traditional Chinese society. There are of course saunas, karaoke lounges, bars in Central and Tsim Sha Tsui and even two magazines publishing gay listings and events. The lesbian scene in Hong Kong is hardly visible.
