Italy: Geography

Way more than just good spaghetti bolognese.

Italy Geography

The geography of Italy is dominated by the boot-shaped Italian Peninsula, and two major mountain ranges: the Dolomites (part of the Alps) and the Apennines. As a result, much of the countryside is hilly and ruggedly beautiful. Sicily and Sardinia, the largest islands off the Italian coast, are both are among the top destinations for island holidays in Europe. Unusually, Italy has two independent city states within its borders: Vatican City and San Marino. Both are highly popular destinations in their own right (many of whom come on pilgrimage tours to the Vatican alone).
