Italy: When to Book
Way more than just good spaghetti bolognese.
The general rule on when to book holidays to Italy is to do it early, or do it late. Booking 7 or 8 months in advance should get you the lowest rates on flights to Italy and many hotels reward early bird booking with cheaper room rates. However, you can find some excellent last minute deals on hotels in Italy if you’re willing to hold out and don’t mind too much where in the country you go. You’re most likely to find bargain last minute holidays in Italy in one of the resort areas, such as Lake Como. This is a riskier way of travelling, however, as you can never be sure what you’re going to get. Rome sees a massive spike in its visitor numbers during Easter, as many people come to the Vatican to receive the Pope’s Easter blessing. If you want to visit Rome at Easter, book as far in advance as you can. Christmas in Italy is a less popular time to visit; many hotels and restaurants are closed and it can get very cold, especially in the north.
