Way more than just good spaghetti bolognese.
The Italians do resorts well – try looking at Madeira, Lake Como, the Amalfi coast and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia for some of the best bargains on resort accommodation in Italy. Resorts tend to be big and popular, so don’t expect much in the way of isolation – however, you can find some great all-in package deals for resort accommodation if you book flights to Italy online, or the “bucket shops” (last minute travel deal websites). Don’t dismiss Italian resorts as all about the sun worshipping, however; there are some surprisingly good ski resorts in Italy, particularly around the Aosta Valley on the north western border with France. The winter Olympics were held in Turin in 2006, with the skiing events based at the Sauze d'Oulx resort. One word of caution: it tends to be harder to find childcare in Italian resorts than in the rest of Europe, as its Italian families often go on holiday with grandparents, who keep an eye on the kids while the parents hit the pool or slopes.
