Kuala Lumpur: Gay and Lesbian
Easier to negotiate than Bangkok, less cosmopolitan than Singapore and more eclectic than Hanoi
The gay scene in Kuala Lumpur is surprisingly widespread and sophisticated in a country where the religion is predominantly Islam and gay sexual activity is illegal. Though gay life in Kuala Lumpur is still largely underground, the city’s fast growth in the international arena has probably contributed to a more liberal support and acceptance of gay activities. However, one still needs to act discreetly and avoid unwanted attention with overt displays of affection. As a holiday for gay and lesbians in Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant city. There are thriving businesses in retail, fashion and entertainment outlets that cater especially for gay customers. A growing number of night clubs and bars welcome the patronage of gay and lesbian customers. Gay and lesbian nights at straight clubs are a common event.
