A bustling city with a laid-back, casual nature
The division between rich and poor in Manila is considerably higher than in the wealthier, more developed countries of the world and so some travelers may be surprised at the conditions that some Manila residents live in. It is advisable to exercise caution when visiting Manila. Though most street crime is relegated to the poorer parts of Manila, there are panhandling and some tourist-scams which operate in the more upscale shopping and business areas of the city. Do not go with anyone who insists they “know” you and avoid getting in cars which are not white, metered, labeled taxis, or if there is another person already in the cab. People are very friendly in Manila, so don’t be overly suspicious, just be careful. Newspapers have reported a recent drop in crime in Metro Manila of up to 30%, so this is indeed good news.
