Mexico: Geography

A land of contrasts straddling temperate and tropical zones

Mexico is located in the southern part of the North American continent. The country borders the United States of America towards the north and the Pacific Ocean on its south and west, while the east borders the Gulf of Mexico and the southeast borders Guatemala, Belize and the Caribbean Sea. Mexico is the 14th largest country in the world in terms of area, covering 1,972,550sq km, with a 9330km long coastline. The mountain ranges of Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental cross the country from north to south. The main rivers that flow through Mexico are the Río Bravo, the Lerma-Santiago River and the Usumacinta.
