New Zealand: Crime
Land of the Long White Cloud
New Zealand is considered a very safe destination for travellers, although you should always exercise caution when walking in the big cities after dark. Once the shops close in the early evening, many New Zealand city centres are deserted, and public transport often shuts down. It is not advisable for visitors, especially single females, to walk alone in poorly lit areas at night. You should always watch your belongings in crowded areas or on public transport where pickpockets may operate, and don’t leave valuables on show inside your parked car, as car crime is not uncommon in the big cities.
