Hotels in Portugal are divided into two categories: hotels and pensaõs. Hotels are often purpose built buildings while pensaõs are always housed in shared premises, usually taking up several floors of a private home. Both are meant to provide meals, those only offering breakfast should have residencial added to their name. A third category of apart-hotels can only be found around Portugal offering a similar service to a regular hotel, but with self catering facilities. Prices vary widely throughout Portugal, depending on the time of year and classification, however, there is usually plenty of room for negotiation. Prices in the Algarve can drop considerably in low season, whereas hotels in Lisbon and Oporto generally charge the same prices throughout the year. When booking it is advised to book well in advance, especially in the Algarve during high season.
