Queenstown: Hiking - Walking
The Adventure City
Queenstown’s spectacular alpine setting provides the keen walker with a wealth of hiking and walking opportunities. Called ‘tramping’ in New Zealand, hiking is something of a national pastime for kiwis and some of New Zealand’s best hiking can be found near Queenstown. Popular hiking trails around Queenstown include the Routeburn track which is a 3 day hike through 32 kilometres of wildly varied scenery.
The Rees-Dart Track is a 4 to 5 day hike through a rugged landscape of rivers, farmland, forest, and mountain scenery. The Kepler track is a four day circuit which takes you through the incredible natural heritage area of the Fiordland National Park. A less demanding multi-day walk is the Greenstone Caples Track which is also a world heritage area due its outstanding natural beauty. All tracks are well maintained with comfortable huts provided at each stage of the hikes.
Adventurous walkers can go it alone (being properly equipped, sticking to the tracks, staying in the huts, and respecting the environment) or organised guided hikes can be easily arranged in Queenstown. If a multi-day hike near Queenstown sounds a bit tough, there are plenty of shorter walking opportunities around Queenstown ranging from a couple of hours to a day.
