Switzerland: Spectator Sports
A summer and winter sports paradise
If you don’t fancy taking part, but are happy to watch someone else being active while you’re in Switzerland, the most popular spectator sports in Zurich are ice hockey and fussball (soccer). The main hockey club is the ZSC Lions. They play home games at Hallenstadion in Oerlikon September-June.
There are two local soccer teams, FC Zurich plays home games at Stadion Letzigrund, and Grasshopper-Club Zurich hosts its games at Stadion Hardturm. Tickets are usually available on game day at the stadiums. Basel has the richest football club in Switzerland and is also home to some top ice hockey competitions, as well as the Badminton Swiss Open, European Skateboard Championships and high-level volleyball. Klosters is home to one of the world’s most gruelling mountain bike races – the Swiss Bike Masters – in July, and there are chances to watch top-class skiing, bobsledding and even snow polo in resorts such as St Moritz.
