Sydney: Whale Watching

The Cultural Hub of Australia's East Coast

Based on the cusp of the Pacific and home to a vast assortment of local marine life, Sydney is a fantastic destination for whale watching and also an excellent place for spotting dolphins. Whale Watching trips commence in mid-May and run daily until the beginning of December each year. In May, the Humpbacks begin passing by Sydney on their Northern migration, and by early August these whales have moved onto their breeding grounds up north. From July to September there are mainly Southern Right whales, Humpbacks and dolphins visiting the coast before the return of the Humpback whales on their Southern migration around May. Most of the major guide companies operate with a guarantee of at least one whale sighting on all their trips.
