Bridging the East and West
Turkey is a relatively safe country with very few incidents of violent crimes being reported. While rural towns and villages are literally crime free, urban centers like Istanbul and Izmir do report cases of crimes, though most are petty crimes. Pick pocketing, mugging and snatching are the most common forms of crime in Turkey. Drugging of unsuspecting tourists is also common, with the motive of robbery, so avoid accepting edibles or anything to drink from strangers. In Turkey, apart from the locals, other tourists, disguised as locals, also take to snatching and robbery, so avoid befriending people you do not know. In Istanbul, the areas of Taksim Square, Sultanahmet, and the areas around the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are notorious for snatchings and robberies so avoid them if possible.
